About

The stratigraphic units are shown in the figure. The flat plain upon which the buttes project upward, is underlain by Permian Cedar Mesa Sandstone. This is important to know about the nearby and similar in appearance, Valley of the Gods, is stratigraphically below. Here, the conglomeratic Shinarump is the capstone that protects the buttes. At Valley of the Gods, it's the Ceder Mesa Ss that caps the buttes and Halgaito Shale that forms the slopes and looks similar to the slopes of Organ Rock here at Monument Valley.
